WALT MINNICK: Raise taxes and lower benefits


BOISE, IDAHO – Democrat Walt Minnick called for reducing Social Security benefits for seniors, raising the eligibility age to receive benefits and increasing taxes in the City Club Candidate Forum this week.

When asked about social security, Minnick said, "It is going to take some combination of reducing benefits or later eligibility age or more, greater payments into the system in order to keep it solvent or we're going to have to supplement it with tax revenues."


He added, "I think it is high time that the Congress get serious about making these hard choices and salvaging social security before the problem gets any worse."


Congressman Sali later commented on Minnick's statement in saying, "Well, that just goes to show the differences between me and Walt. Walt wants to raise your taxes and decrease your benefits. As a wealthy man, Walt may not think that's a big deal, but for everyday Idahoan's, this would create big problems. That is no way to treat our seniors."

Sali continued in saying, "The federal government made commitments that we are now obligated to fulfill. Those who paid into the Social Security system for years should not have their benefits cut or their taxes raised. There are plenty of other options on the table right now."
